Post 1: Origins of Cinema. Chaplin and Sunrise

This film “Sunrise: A song of Two Humans” (Murnau, 1927) is a 1927 American silent romantic comedy-drama directed by German director F.W.Murnau. I have never watched a silent film before and I  think that this was very interesting. I thought that I wouldn’t even understand what was going on. It tells about a farmer who was married with a child but cheating on his wife with a city girl. The city girl wanted him to kill his wife and run away with her to the city. Before the city girl came along, the couple was “carefree…always happy and laughing”. After a while, the farmer grew tired of living the same life everyday.  After the wife figured out her husband was trying to kill her, she ran away. The husband then ran away after her trying to convince her not to be afraid of him.

After the wife ran away, the husband caught up and he tried to be the best husband he could at the moment, bribing her, because he know what he tried to do was terrible. This got me thinking that the people is this generation do the same thing. We tend to bribe others into getting our way no matter what it takes.

I noticed that the characters did not have names but then again, it did not matter because there was no actual speaking in the film. The sound effects I think was really good; especially when one character tries to call out another ones name. I feel like some of the acts was more dramatic than others.

The 1992 British-American biographical comedy-drama film Chaplin (Attenborough, 1992) was rather funnier than Sunrise in my opinion. This film was a re-creation of the life of Charlie Chaplin, from his humble beginnings in the south London through his early days in British vaudeville. At first, in the film, I thought Chaplin was not really smart but then he showed the director his act. They believed that he wasn’t the real Chaplin. After he performed his comedy drunk act, everyone cheered him on and that was proved that he was the real Chaplin. When he put on his act outside to prove who he was, I thought that he was really good. I think that he was a pretty good actor. I the film shown in class, I thought that part with the wedding was pretty funny and silly. Thought it was silly because, Chaplin was hiding in plain sight but the others chase by acting like he was not there.

The film was structured based on flashbacks as the older Charlie Chaplin mesmerises about the early childhood of Chaplin. His childhood began with extreme property from which he escapes from into the world of music in London. After his mom had an attack on stage, Chaplin took her place on stage for her. Later he gained work with variety show producer Fred Karno. After a while, Chaplin gain a hit with his comedy drunk act .
